The power of connection!

A world of separation

Conflicts and differences of opinion

As conflicts and differences of opinion flare up on all sides, creating an even more profound separation effect than the one already present, we often forget that we are first and foremost social beings, beings of community.

Individualism

Our current society seems to value, and I would even say encourage, individualism to the detriment of teamwork and support for the community... We learn to push our individual limits, to climb the ladder based on our performance and sometimes even our appearance (a person with more self-confidence will potentially have more opportunities for advancement than someone with less... normal you might say), to want to do better than our neighbor or the competition...

Its harmful effects

All these factors have a visible impact on our way of life. Indeed:

  • Whereas our ancestors lived in clans or tribes, today we generally live with our immediate family only.

  • The two parents in the family nest often each have their own careers, each with their own demands and requirements.

  • We're more mobile (both geographically and professionally), so we're less likely to want to put down roots somewhere.

  • Although we're more connected electronically than ever, we're also more socially isolated than ever.

  • Often caught up in our daily routine, the quality and quantity of our social relationships tend to fall by the wayside.

See the other side of the coin: a world of connection with others!

Connection and personal development

In following these trends, we forget an important point: we thrive best when we're bathed in feelings of belonging and connection with others, whereas we suffer when we isolate ourselves and feel alone.

Isolation and its harmful effects

Isolation is often associated with :

  • Increased stress and anxiety levels

  • An increase in blood pressure

  • An increase in inflammation

  • Increased risk of illness and death

The benefits of a social network

Conversely, a person who is well surrounded and has a good social network is more likely to get :

  • An increase in life expectancy

  • Improved functioning of the cardiovascular, endocrine and immune systems

  • Improved mental health

  • Greater resilience to stress

Connection and oxytocin

In fact, oxytocin, which is released when we socialize, stimulates a sense of calm and trust, increasing our desire to connect with others.

In conclusion

So let's rediscover the pleasure of sharing moments with our loved ones or even new people! Connecting with others is so important for our overall health!
